The Department of Conservative Dentistry provides conservative care to preserve teeth damaged from various causes (e.g. caries, trauma, etc.) rather than extracting teeth. The department conducts various researches and treatments including esthetic & conservative restoration, root canal treatment, tooth bleaching, apical surgery with dental microscope, tooth transplantation, and replantation for rehabilitation of original tooth anatomy and oral function, which will enhance the general health and welfare of our patients.
The Department of Conservative Dentistry has improved in both clinical and academic aspects since 1973 of its foundation. Currently, the department has 27 latest dental chair units and microscope center equipped with 17 dental surgery microscopes. In the Korean dental school appraisal, the department was awarded with an honor of the best department. Also, researches on basic and clinical field are being actively carried out and many articles are being published in the SCI(Science Citation Index)-ranked international journals every year.
There are 3 professors in endodontic division and 4 professors in restorative division in Sin-chon dental hospital. They have showed not only excellent treatments in the clinic but also the outstanding accomplishments in research field.
Based on the top-level clinical and research results in Korea, the Department of Conservative Dentistry has been training latest dental trends and clinical treatment by opening various training programs every year such as advanced endodontic training course, microsurgery training course, tooth bleaching seminar and composite resin and ceramic training course. Also, patients’ convenience has been improved by adopting the CEREC system based on CAD/CAM technology since 2006. Now it is possible to quickly restore masticatory function on 1-visit by making a chairside esthetic restoration.
Esthetic and conservative restorations and bleaching --- Normal esthetics and functions are recovered by restorations with various dental materials; tooth colored resin / porcelain, amalgam, gold alloy. Esthetic dental problems, such as abnormal shapes or discoloration, are managed with tooth whitening and /or tooth colored restoration for enhancing pleasant appearance
Hypersensitivity treatment --- Severe sensitivity to thermal stimuli or acidic foods is frequently caused by the exposure of root surfaces due to aggressive tooth brushing or heavy force on the teeth. Teeth with hypersensitivity can be treated by applying desensitizing agents or tooth-colored fillings.
Root canal therapy (endodontic treatment) and apical microsurgery --- Teeth with pulpal and apical pathosis could be saved by nonsurgical and/or surgical endodontic procedures aided by dental microscope.
Tooth replantation and transplantation --- When conventional treatment fails, intentional extraction, treatment of the tooth outside the socket and almost immediate replacement can be performed for the last resort. And if the tooth cannot be saved because of severe decay or a periodontal problem, a third molar (wisdom tooth) can be transplanted to the missing area.
