Emergency Medicine is responsible for acute illness, injury, or mass disaster. It has a large treatment area across all clinical areas. Also it offers professional cares of cardiopulmonary resuscitation, shock, and intoxication. Emergency Medicine has some traits. First, it is different from outpatient and inpatient cares which are classified by disease types; Emergency Medicine is responsible for cares which take place only in the emergency department. Second, it is different from other divisions that mainly concern about diseases; Emergency Medicine concentrates on the places and the situations. These traits can be seen in the cases of mass disasters, when the division classifies and cares patients. Third, it is not only the medical division but also the emergency medical system so it is a part of the social safety net. These traits can be seen from operations and supervisions of emergency classes such as 119 Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) class, fire schools, or public lifesaving educations.
Clinical Experience – It opened the first Korean emergency department in March 1987, offered medical services to the Seoul Olympic Games in September 1988, introduced the first emergency medicine residency in March 1989, specified the first trauma emergency center in August 2000, got cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training certification in July 2006, and expanded the emergency center in July 2011.
