Department of Neurosurgery

Severance Hospital was the founder of modern medical science in Korea with the establishment of Kwang Hye Won in 1885 by Dr. Horace N. Allen, missionary doctor, and has been serving the national hea¬lth for the last 120 years as the leading organization among the medical institutions in this country. Severance Hospital has long been recognized as one of the top hospitals in Korea. The Department of Neurosurgery, founded in 1957, has been dedicated to provide a comprehensive range of services for the diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of pa-tients with neurosurgical disorders. The Department of Neurosurgery has 33 professors and 19 fellows specializing in all phases of neurological surgery. The Department of Neurosurger, the single biggest neurosurgery unit in our nation, is strongly committed to provide multidisciplinary approach that brings current medical developments into clinical practice.

Our training, clinical experience, and scientific research are driven by a sincere dedication to excellent medical care. In 2013, we have achieved 6% higher performance in our clinical activities compared with those in 2012. In addition to clinical performance, education and research is large parts of our mission. Because of our successful resident training program, we provided 6 new neurosurgeons, and 22 residents are currently enrolled in the training program. Currently, 33 postgraduate students are attend¬ing the graduate school. In addition, as a result of our decision to shift our efforts from clinic to research, we have raised the highest amount of research funds for our brain and spine research center. Furthermore, 40 clinical and basic re¬search projects are currently on-going with a combined budget of KRW 3,087,556,950 (USD 2,892,596). I am also delighted that our alumni is playing a great part in their own departments.

To achieve maintain the excellent clinical, research, and education system, I strongly believe that we must pay what needs to be paid. We were able to effectively achieve all of the above owing to each one of us who has worked with great effort, and I would like to express my sincere appreciation for all of you. It is not surprising because our department was not built by those who waited and rested and wished to look behind them. Our leadership in neurosurgery, our hopes for science, our obligations to ourselves will require us to make our best effort and become the world’s leading neurosurgical institute. We will organize and measure the best of our energies and skills because there is new disease to be conquered, new knowledge to be gained, and new information to be shared. I ask God’s blessing on you.
