Division of Pediatric Surgery
Severance Hospital opened its Department of Pediatric Surgery in 1975, which was the first pediatric surgical service in Korea exclusively dedicated to pediatric surgery. At present, the Department sees approximately 1000 pediatric surgical cases every year.
Neonatal disease, including anorectal malformation, esophageal atresia, small bowel atresia, Hirschsprung's disease, congenital diaphragmatic hernia, and pediatric diseases that include defecation difficulty and malignant tumors are treated through a separate specialized clinic. Day surgery is also available for inguinal hernia, undescended testicle, and benign mass cases.

Specialized Procedures and State-of-the-Art Facilities
- Specialized Services: Specialized procedures include surgeries for biliary atresia, choledochal cyst, anorectal malformation, congenital megacolon, as well as laparoscopic surgery and congenital tracheal stenosis (slide thyrocricotracheoplasty). We also perform prenatal diagnosis and early surgery of congenital deformities in close cooperation with the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

Clinical Experience - Neonatal Cholestasis Clinic
This specialized clinic is unique in Korea. For example we have treatment more patients with biliary atresia and choledochal cyst than anywhere else in the world. Other illnesses including intractable liver disease or congenital cholestasis are treated using a systematic approach. - Anorectal Malformation
Specialized operative techniques and a systematic approach for anorectal malformation or cloacal anomalies are used. In addition, we provide team-based care in collaboration with the Departments of Pediatric Urology, Pediatric Neurosurgery, Pediatric Neurology, the Pediatric Orthopedics and Pediatric Rehabilitation Medicine for the complex cloacal anomalies such as cloacal extrophy. - Congenital Megacolon
Our Department has continuously performed single-staged operations without abdominal wounding. - Congenital Airway Problems
Through slide thyrocricotracheoplasty, laryngeal laser surgery or aortopexy, and in close cooperation with the Departments of Pediatric Radiology and Pediatric Otorhinolaryngoloy, we have maintained a high success rate in unusual or intractable cases of airway problems such as congenital tracheal stenosis, tracheomalacia, congenital subglottic stenosis, and others. - Minimally Invasive Surgery using Laparoscopy and Robotics
Laparoscopic surgery and robotic surgery are customized methods used for acute appendicitis, fundoplication, gastrostomy and benign tumor cases. An emergency endoscopic team, liver transplantation team and ECMO team are also utilized for specialized treatment of critically or seriously ill neonates, infants and children.
