Department of Medical Oncology

The most important thing of all that is conducted by the Department of Oncology is to carry out the anti-cancer treatment for patients. The selection and dosage of anti-cancer medicine in treating many types of cancer is a specific field. Prescription of anti-cancer medicine to patients is only possible through the development of new anti-cancer therapy after performing clinical tests. In order to provide opportunity of having new medical treatment in the perspective of patients along with new medicines such as Glivec and Iressa that are frequently mentioned on the press, the Department of Oncology is carrying out various clinical tests in relation to breast cancer, colorectal cancer, gastric cancer and lung cancer. In addition to prescribing anti-cancer medicine to patients, the Department of Oncology provides training services to newly visiting patients for the diagnosis and prevention of cancer. When surgical operation or radiological treatment is needed, the Department of Oncology together with the departments of surgery and radiation oncology tries to finds the most effective therapy in treating cancer.

Lastly in order to minimize patients’ pain, the Department of Oncology is actively carrying out the fundamental studies on the conservative treatment, occurrence and metastasis for the improved quality of life during the treatment period of end-stage cancer patients by developing the supportive care like antiemetics and by adopting a hospice system.

 

Major Clinical Results

  • 1969: Establishing the Yonsei Cancer Center first in Korea
  • Clinical Trials in Progress (43 cases): 13 cases of lung cancer, 9 cases of gastric cancer, 9 cases of breast cancer, 6 cases of colorectal cancer, 2 cases of renal cell carcinoma, 1 case of ovarian cancer, 1 case of hepatocellular carcinoma, 1 case of head and neck cancer, and 1 case of advanced neoplasm
