Department of Radiation Oncology

The Department of Radiation Oncology, started radiotherapy since 1937, has leaded the field of radiation oncology in Korea with a history of 60 years. Our department has adopted high-performance medical linear accelerator first in Korea and has made a historical moment in the development of radiation oncology. Especially, we played a leading role in treating cancer by introducing and distributing new technologies such as the high dose rate intracavitary brachytherapy effective for the treatment of cervical cancer, radiotherapy during a surgical operation for lung and pancreas cancers, radioactive brain surgery that has made an innovative moment in treating cerebral tumor, hyperthermia of killing cancer cells by applying heat, total body irradiation (TBI) for bone marrow transplantation (BMT), 3-dimensional conformal radiotherapy (3D-CRT) of using advanced computer program, intensity modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) and tomotherapy. In addition to these, we also have been active in writing scholarly papers. Professor Gwieon Kim first in Korea has published a science paper in 1994 on the Official Journal of the American Society for Therapeutic Radiation and Oncology, International Journal of Radiation Oncology, Biology, Physics and since then on, the Department of Radiation Oncology has continuously published a number of papers on prominent international science journals up until now. Also, study results have been globally recognized as many of them were taken by cancer-related textbooks.

Bone Marrow Transplantation and Peripheral Blood Stem Cell Transplantation : Our Division performed the first successful case of allogenic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation in Korea (1981). The clinic has an excellent success rate with these specialized therapies performed in various childhood malignancies such as leukemia, brain tumors, neuroblastoma, and aplastic anemia. In addition, the Pediatric Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation Unit opened in 1997 and expanded in 2006 with 4 isolation beds for transplantation and 4 sub-isolation beds to prevent infection after bone marrow transplantation.

  • Introducing new clinical therapy by introducing Thermatron-8 a hyperthermia first in Korea (1984)
  • Successfully performing the intraoperative radiotherapy (IORT) first in Korea for patients of gastric cancer (1986)
  • Improving the bone marrow transplantation together with total body irradiation (1991)
  • Initiating the 3-dimensional conformal radiotherapy (3D-CRT) first in Korea by introducing
    Clinac 2100C/D an advanced medical equipment
    Selected by Sisa Press as the best organization in Korea for curing cancer (1994)
  • IMRT-based therapy and adoption of therapy planning equipment
    Selected by Dong-A Daily Newspaper as the best team in the field of radiation therapy (2002)
  • Tomotherapy-based therapy and adoption of therapy planning equipment (2005)
